Why your PDF catalog doesn't show up on Google, and how to fix it
Most PDF catalogs published online are invisible to search engines. The cause is the publishing format, which gives them nothing to index.
The problem: a PDF that's “online” isn't necessarily readable by Google
A PDF uploaded as is, or displayed in an embedded viewer (iframe, Flash-style player), creates several concrete SEO problems:
- Many catalogs are actually scanned images: there is no text inside, so nothing to index, even if the document “looks” full of content.
- A viewer embedded in a page often provides only a generic title and a single URL for the entire document, so no specific page can rank in search results.
- Without a description or metadata specific to each document, Google has nothing relevant to show in search results.
- A temporary link (free trial, preview) indexed by mistake hurts your SEO once it expires: a ghost page, a 404 error in search results.
Typical embedded PDF
- Text often missing (image/scan)
- A single URL for the whole document
- No description or title per catalog
- No control over indexing of temporary links
Denkimedia publication
- Text extracted and readable by Google, exact position preserved
- Clean, permanent URL for each publication
- Automatically generated title and description
- Temporary/protected links explicitly excluded from indexing
What Denkimedia actually does
Every publication is built to be readable by visitors and search engines alike:
- Text Google can read: every word in the PDF is extracted and kept at its exact position on the page, searchable and indexable, with data tables rebuilt as structured HTML rather than loose text.
- A clean, permanent URL for each publication (Solo plan and above) that never changes and can be shared, cited and indexed for the long term.
- Automatic title and description: generated from the content of the first page if you don't provide them.
- SEO under your control: you turn it on publication by publication, at creation or in the editor. An internal document, or one meant for a few recipients, stays out of search engines.
- An up-to-date XML sitemap that lists only active, permanent, unprotected publications with search indexing enabled, never a temporary or confidential link.
- Clean exclusion of temporary or protected links from indexing (
X-Robots-Tag: noindexheader), so a page that will expire or isn't meant to be public never shows up in search results. - Continuous updates: engine improvements benefit publications that are already online, with no need for you to regenerate them.
What it means for you
A product or distributor catalog that only lives on your website is not found through a Google search. Once its content is indexable, it can be found by prospects looking for a specific reference, product or range, in addition to those who already know your site.
